WHY PIPELINE STRAINERS MATTER

Strainers are the first line of defense in any piping system — mechanically removing debris before it reaches pumps, compressors, valves, meters, spray nozzles, and turbines.

A pipeline strainer is a mechanical filter that removes and retains particles too large to pass through its straining element, while allowing the flowing media — liquid or gas — to pass unobstructed. This simple principle protects millions of dollars in downstream equipment across every industrial sector.

Titan Flow Control strainers should always be installed ahead of pumps and other expensive downstream equipment to help ensure proper protection and trouble-free operation. This even holds true for "clean lines" — protecting against scale and accidentally introduced items such as tools, gaskets, nuts, or bolts.

The most common range of particle retention spans from 1 inch down to 40 microns (0.0015 inch), covering everything from large debris and gravel down to fine silt, pollen, and corrosion products.

FIVE TYPES FOR EVERY APPLICATION

Each strainer type is engineered for specific installation conditions, cleaning requirements, and flow characteristics. Click each type to explore.

01

Y-Strainer

Horizontal or vertical pipelines · Compact inline protection
Y-strainers can be used in horizontal or vertical (downward) pipelines. A cylindrical perforated or mesh-lined screen within the strainer collects debris as the flow travels through. Cleaning normally requires removal of the screen, but a blow-off drain valve can extend the time between cleanings. Titan's Y-strainers are available in ANSI classes up to 2500.

02

Basket Strainer

Horizontal applications · Higher debris capacity
Basket strainers are used in horizontal applications where cleaning will be less frequent. Their larger bodies typically provide more open area for debris collection than Y-strainers. The straining element — the "basket" — features a handle for easy removal and secure placement. Available in slanted-top or straight-top designs, with a variety of cover options including quick-open covers for easy access.

03

Duplex Strainer

Non-interruptible applications · Zero-downtime cleaning
Duplex strainers are ideal for non-interruptible applications. Two basket chambers and a flow diverter system allow pipeline flow to be switched from one chamber to the other. Because flow is completely isolated to a single chamber, the inactive chamber can be cleaned without shutdown. Titan's duplex strainers are compact, easy to operate, and require no special tools for straining element removal.

Fabricated Strainer

Custom-engineered · Unique applications
Fabricated strainers provide additional flexibility and design options for unique applications. Titan offers fabricated basket strainers, tee strainers, duplex strainers, and temporary strainers with special cleaning options — both hand-operated and motorized — to facilitate debris removal. Options include flow variations, cover designs, and Davit cover assemblies. Titan's engineering and fabrication teams are customer-focused and detail-oriented.

Temporary Strainer

Startup & commissioning · Construction debris capture
Temporary strainers — also called cone or "witch's hat" strainers and basket or "pilgrim's hat" strainers — are purpose-built for start-up operations. They capture construction debris including weld slag, pipe scale, and sealant during initial system flush, protecting downstream equipment before permanent strainers take over. Available in conical (Style D) and basket (Style E) configurations.

Straining Elements

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCREEN OR BASKET

One of the most important design considerations when purchasing a strainer is specifying the perforation or mesh size of the straining element.

Perforated

Titan offers a wide range of perforation sizes with standard options optimized for the best balance of open area ratio, hole arrangement, and gauge thickness — resulting in the least pressure drop. A 60° staggered round hole arrangement provides superior strength and large open area ratio.

Standard: 60° staggered round hole · Superior OAR & strength

Wire Mesh

For finer straining applications down to 40 micron, wire mesh elements are available. Titan uses a mono-filament, plain square weave that exhibits large open area ratio and very low flow resistance. Plain Dutch and Twilled Dutch weaves are also available upon request.

Wire Mesh Lined

Wire mesh elements are reinforced with a heavier gauge, perforated metal backing for additional support. Titan's standard backing is 5/32" perforated metal, providing excellent support without significantly diminishing the open area ratio. Required for larger strainers and higher pressures.

Determining Opening Size

Screen openings should be approximately one-half the diameter of the largest allowable particle. The largest allowable particle is the size that can pass through downstream equipment without causing damage.

For example, if the maximum allowable particle is 1/16", the screen opening would be specified at 1/32".

In addition to particle size, the quantity of debris in the flowing media must also be considered when determining the appropriate opening.

Avoiding Overstraining

A common mistake is specifying a screen opening that is too small for the application. This leads to overstraining and should be avoided:

Increased maintenance costs — excessive cleaning requirements drive up labor and downtime.
Dramatic pressure drop — restriction increases energy consumption and reduces system performance.
Element failure — the straining element may become damaged under excessive differential pressure.

Monitoring differential pressure: Install pressure gauges on both inlet and outlet sides of the strainer. It is not recommended to allow differential pressure to exceed 20 psi. Straining elements are not designed to withstand the same pressure as the strainer housing — if fully clogged, the element may fail. Titan offers special drilled or wedge wire screens that can withstand full line pressure when clogged.
Advanced Solutions

SPECIAL SCREEN & BASKET DESIGNS

When standard configurations aren't enough, Titan engineers custom solutions for the most demanding applications.

Magnetic Screen Assembly

Recommended for applications requiring removal of microscopic ferrous particles. Powerful ALNICO magnetic inserts create a continuous magnetic field, trapping ferrous particles that even the finest mesh would typically not remove. Ideal for lubrication, hydraulic, and machine coolant systems.

Special Drilled & Wedge Wire

Straining elements fabricated to withstand full line pressure when clogged. Individually drilled holes in heavy gauge metal (up to 3/8" thick) or wedge wire construction provides maximum durability for applications where element failure would be catastrophic.

Pleated (Convoluted) Elements

Expanded straining surface area disperses particles uniformly, alleviating the layered build-up and pressure loss typical of cylindrical elements. Pleated elements maintain lower pressure drop over longer service intervals — reducing maintenance frequency and improving system efficiency.
